How to Play Tradle
Tradle is a daily geography game where you guess a mystery country from its export treemap — a chart of everything it sells to the world, sized by value. You get six guesses, and no letters: only geography and economics.
Reading the export treemap
Each coloured tile is a product the country exports, and the bigger the tile, the larger its share of total exports. Colours group products into categories — metals, minerals, machinery, textiles, and so on. A map ruled by a single giant tile signals a specialised economy; a patchwork of small tiles signals a diversified one.
Distance and direction feedback
After each guess, Tradle tells you how far your country is from the answer in kilometres and points you in the right direction with an arrow. Use that like a compass: a wrong guess still fences off half the map, so play your next country on the side the arrow points to.
How to Read Exports to Guess the Country
The treemap is a fingerprint. Once you learn a handful of signature exports, most puzzles give themselves away in seconds.
Signature exports that pin a region
Some products are near-unique to one part of the world. Cocoa points at West Africa; crude petroleum with little else points at the Gulf; coffee and soybeans lean South America; cars, machinery and packaged medicaments lean Western Europe or East Asia. When you see one of these dominating, you have already halved the globe.
Best first guesses for Tradle
Open with large, diversified economies that border many others — Germany, China, the United States, Brazil, India. They rarely win outright, but the distance and direction they return map the board fast and point you at the right continent before you have spent three guesses.
Let the top partner narrow it further
The biggest buyer is a strong regional tell. A country selling mostly to the United States is often its neighbour; one selling mostly to China or Germany sits in that country's trade orbit. Pair the top export with the top partner and the answer usually falls out.

Tips to Solve Tradle Faster
- Name the top category first. Decide whether the map is minerals, machinery, agriculture, or textiles before you guess a specific country.
- Trust the arrow, not your gut. Direction and distance turn one wrong guess into a whole eliminated region.
- Learn ten signature exports. Cocoa, crude, coffee, cars, gold, garments — a short list unlocks most days.
- Read the top partner. The largest buyer usually reveals the neighbourhood the country trades in.
- Take a hint before your last guess. One region or capital clue beats burning your final try on a hunch.
Common Tradle Mistakes to Avoid
- Fixating on one product. Many countries export crude or gold — use the whole mix and the trade partners, not a single tile.
- Ignoring the direction arrow. It is the fastest information in the game; a guess without using it wastes a turn.
- Guessing tiny economies early. Small countries give weak positional feedback — open with big, well-connected ones.
- Forgetting re-exports. Trade hubs like the Netherlands or Singapore show products they don't actually produce; weigh that against geography.
